The medical applications of hot melt adhesives are an excellent example of the depth of artimelt’s R&D. The company launched its first medical solutions to the market back in the 1990s. Adhesives for sensitive skin soon followed, as well as bacteria-resistant and water-absorbing hot melt adhesives for wound dressings. In recent years, our portfolio has grown considerably as additional functionality is becoming increasingly important for products in modern wound care.

Highest requirements

Developing products for the medical industry is extremely challenging. Raw materials must be carefully selected, biocompatibility is a prerequisite, and allergies must not be triggered. Adhesives must therefore be free of latex, rosin and phthalates. At artimelt, R&D and production comply with the strict (EN) ISO 13485 standard, and we are also familiar with the requirements of the MDR (European Medical Device Regulation).

artimelt is well-versed in adhesives for the medical sector and can therefore develop solutions that incorporate challenging properties such as sensitive skin (artimeltlowtrauma), breathability (artimeltbreathable) or antimicrobial efficacy (artimeltantimicrobial).

Sterilizable hot melt adhesives

Medical products must be able to be sterilized in their packaging using common methods such as ethylene oxide, gamma rays or X-rays. It is vital that the contents remain uncontaminated over an extended period. It makes no difference whether it is a plaster, a syringe or a surgical drape. Medical hot melt adhesives from artimelt not only survive sterilization without any problems, but some of them are even upgraded in the process through improved cohesion.
